Press release : “Dumbo/It’s Hot in a Disco ArtHappening”

“Dumbo It’s Hot in a Disco Art Happening” it’s a hit and run event. It’s a coming together of very diverse artist who share one thing, their commitment to their work. There’s no one vision, them,idea or ideology.The reason for the show is clearly explained by the show’s German , Berlin based curator ADLER A.F. grand motto “ IN ART WE TRUST!”. It’s sort of a Guerrilla Event, devised in few weeks by chance and not so chance encounters between the participating artists and the curator.

In this moment & time in Visual Arts all over, but especially here in NYC, of inflation of art production (parallel with economic meltdown we are experiencing), when commerce dictates more and more complex interplay between artists , curators, institutions, commercial and non profit ones, dealers, art criticism, Art Fares,public or private money.....,can be just nice to cut trough all of this with a simple gesture, a space and a desire to come together and share the work with whoever shows up,simple & direct.It’s a desire for independence and having some form of control over this to the art most essential element ,the communication, since the Art work exists only in this transaction between the creator and the viewer. It’s an intimate experience not unlike sex.

For Adler A.F. whose other persona is “Trash Queen” performance artist, the location & geography is very important element , since as member of a new social class of international wondering artists, she moves from country to country ,space to space as a fetish and each of them interacts with her and dictates the nature the art that come to be. Location for this show, Dumbo fascinates her. In a very organic and natural manner she ran into artist John Enser Parker who works in a studio in Dumbo’s Jay st., relatively old artist studio building, still surviving the incredible transformation of this area, from a place were bodies were dumped to a luxury neighborhood. Here the play between the Landlords and the Artists is moving into the final terminal stage, artist being kicked out. This is a majestic place between two legendary bridges with a historic memory and John’s offer of his space for this event was an opportunity not to be missed.

ADLER A.F. looked into it ;Dumbo, an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass is a borough of Brooklyn. It encompasses two sections located between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. New Yorkers were joking that it stands for "Down Under Manhattan Bridge," but than they arbitrarily added the "O" at the end because they did not want to have a neighborhood called "Dumb." This description can be quite appropriate to describe the nature of this show-Aart Happening.
